September 30, 2007 - Forums closing. Please Read

Due to an increase in spam activity on the forums, and the lack of active users I am closing the Terror 2000 forums. The forums will actually remain online, and all current users may continue to post there, however we will not be accepting any new users. If anyone truly wants an account please email me directly and I will create it for you. This is the most effective way to deal with the spam on a board that isnt that busy.

Thanks for understanding.

April 3, 2007 - new forum rule, please read!

Hello everyone,

So after putting in lots of security features the spam attacks on our forums have really slowed down. We are still getting suspicious accounts on the forums every few days, so I installed one final security measure and this is very important... so please read it.

New members who register for the forums have 24 hours to make a post. If you dont make at least 1 post in that time your account will be automatically deleted. The reason for doing this is because all the suspicious accounts just seem to be sitting there not doing anything, so this little script should take care of that.

Thats all for now, thanks for reading.

March 4, 2007 - More news on our spammers...

Ok I noticed another spam account on the forums about 45 mins ago. The account was deleted, and I installed some more security features. I think I have taken care of spam bots with a few nifty little mods, however the problem of human spammers remains. I turned on account activation a while ago, and now you need to provide a valid email address so you can activate the account and post. If you make an account with a fake email the account will still show up in the memberlist, along with the information you privided. Since most spammers just want their spam URLs to show up in the memberlist so they can be indexed by google I have removed the option to enter in a website URL durring account registration. You can still enter one once the account has been activated, and with a spammer using a fake email there is no point since the URL wont show in the list.

I am very tired right now and I am going to sleep soon, however I have some more security updates coming soon. I will be removing the website URL from the memberslist display totally tomorrow night. The big thing I am working on is a feature to delete inactive users (accounts that havent been activated, spammers with fake emails) after a certain period of time. I am thinking something along the lines of 2 hours, so if a spam account is made, the URL's wont be displayed and index by google and the account will auto delete after 2 hours ( I may change the 2 hour limit to something else, we will see).

This leaves one last problem... someone making an actual free email address (hotmail for example) and coming here and making an account, activating it and then posting spam. IF this happens it can be deleted quickly and the email/IP will be banned, so HOPEFULLY this will solve the problem once and for all.

thanks again for being so understanding while we work on this forum issue!

March 3, 2007 - Dont ya just love spam?

This morning I noticed 2 new spam accounts had been created. As I promised last night I have installed several new security measures on the forums that should stop the spam bots as well as human spammers. I apologize for all this crap being spread all over the forums, you would think that spammers would be insterested in going after very popular and active forums... not our little one. I have more security features lined up and ready to install if the spam attacks continue, lets hope this does the trick!

March 3, 2007 - Just foiled a coming spam attack...

Well I just noticed several spam posts on our forums once again! I am very happy I caught them early this time... there were only 9 posts this time unlike last time when there were hundreds. I also deleted over 30 suspicious accounts, most of which were spam accounts gearing up for a big forum attack once again.

Last time I set it so that all users must recieve a confirmation email in order to activate their accounts, and somehow these spammers found a way around it. For now I have it set to ADMIN authorization for registration. What does this mean for you? When you create an account I will recieve an email and I will manually activate the account. Hopefully this will stop our spammers. I will also be looking for some new security patches to help secure the forums.

I am asking for your help in getting this spammer. The account that just posted the 9 spam posts... his IP address was logged. Im willing to bet that it was a fake IP but I am going to post it in hopes that this spammer was just sloppy. If it was his actual IP he is about to get hit hard. Have fun with the IP address everyone... here it is.

February 4, 2007 - Forums are open again!

The forums are now open for registration once again. To prevent future spam attacks we now require account activation. What does that mean? When you sign up an email will be sent to the address you provide when you create your account. There will be a link in the email and you must click on that link in order to activate your account and start posting. Please use a real email address or you will not be able to activate your account. Also, if using an email service with a spam filter and are not getting the activation email please check your junk/trash/spam folder as it may be redirected there (I tested it myself with a gmail account and it was detected as spam).

February 4, 2007 - Forums attacked! Important, please read.

Spam Spam and more Spam! I was really busy the last few days and hadnt had any time to stop by the forums, when I stopped in tonight I was blown away by the ammount of spam accounts/posts that had been been infesting the forums for the last few days!

These spam accounts were posting links to supposed porn related sites, however these are usually harmful sites that either infect you with a virus or worm that can cause damage or steal sensative information. Most people know this and avoid clicking on links such as the ones left by our spammers, however if you did click on one of those links I reccomend that you run a virus scan asap.

If you do not have an anti-virus program I will reccomend one for you, it is the one I use and it is very effective and best of all, free!

AVG Free Edition - http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

Please download and install the program and make sure you update the virus database, then perform a full system scan to make sure you are clean. To be extra safe, after running the scans I would change ALL of your online passwords. Better safe than sorry.

I counted over 30 verified spam accounts, and countless posts. I went in and deleted all these spam accounts. To be certain that all spam accounts were removed I deleted ALL users with 0 posts. The total number of accounts I deleted was over 120. I know that many of these accounts were not spam, but I wanted to be sure, for the good of the forums. If you had an account on the forums but had never posted you need to re-register your account, sorry... you can thank the one or two assholes who spammed us for that!

Forum registration has been suspended for the next few days while we add some new security features to help prevent future attacks like this. Sorry for the inconvenience, and thanks for being patient!

We will let you know when the forums are open for registration again.
